A more comfortable, more complete cleaning

The EMS AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master is an advanced dental hygiene system from Switzerland. It allows us to provide Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), a systematic, evidence-based 8-step protocol for managing the biofilm that causes cavities and gum disease on teeth, gums and implants.

What happens at a GBT appointment

We assess your gum and oral health, show you how to manage biofilm at home, and then use warm water and a fine erythritol-based powder to clean your teeth. Your smile is left with a silky-smooth finish, without the scraping of a traditional cleaning.

Why biofilm matters

Biofilm is the sticky layer of bacteria that forms on teeth and gums. It triggers cavities, bad breath, gingivitis, periodontal disease, peri-implantitis and, over time, tooth and implant loss. Research has also linked the bacteria in gum disease, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, to wider health conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. Regular GBT and good home care keep biofilm under control.

How GBT differs from a conventional cleaning

  • Disclosing: a gentle dye makes biofilm visible, so it can be removed precisely and you can see where to focus at home.
  • AIRFLOW®: warm water and PLUS erythritol powder remove biofilm first. It is fast, gentle on gums and comfortable. With the PERIOFLOW® nozzle it also cleans deeper pockets around teeth and implants.
  • PIEZON® PS: a fine ultrasonic instrument removes any remaining hard tartar. Because the biofilm is already gone, tartar is easier to see and less instrumentation is needed.
  • No polishing: polishing paste and rubber cups are no longer needed. Tooth surfaces are left clean and natural tissue is preserved.

Based on research

Each step of the GBT protocol is supported by randomized controlled trials. It is suitable for most patients, including people with sensitive teeth, implants, crowns, veneers and braces.

FAQ

Questions about Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

Is Guided Biofilm Therapy painful?

Most patients find GBT more comfortable than a traditional cleaning. It uses warm water and a fine powder instead of scraping, so it is gentle on sensitive teeth and gums.

Can GBT be used with implants and braces?

Yes. GBT is safe for implants, crowns, veneers and orthodontic appliances, and the PERIOFLOW® nozzle can clean around implants and deeper gum pockets.

How often should I have GBT?

Most patients have GBT at their regular cleaning visits, usually every six months. If you have gum disease or implants, we may recommend more frequent visits.
