What Are Veneers?

Veneers are a cosmetic dental solution for people who do not like the appearance of their teeth. They are wafer-thin shells made of dental porcelain or composite resin. Your dentist attaches and bonds the veneers to the fronts of your teeth. They are made in a laboratory based on impressions of your existing teeth. Veneers are permanent. They can withstand normal chewing pressure and do not detract from your ability to speak normally.

What are the Advantages of Veneers?

Many people choose veneers as a way to improve their smile. Although there are several different cosmetic solutions to unattractive teeth, veneers offer a unique way to cover discolorations, uneven teeth, chipped or cracked teeth, teeth that are too short and other cosmetic dental issues. Their advantages are:

  • Natural appearance
  • Easy on gums
  • Stain resistant
  • Brightens dark teeth
  • Little tooth shaping required before bonding

What to Expect on the First Appointment?

At your first appointment, your dental hygienist cleans your teeth and your dentist examines your teeth, takes x-rays and determines whether veneers are the best option for you. After you and the dentist decide veneers are right for you, the process can begin. The dentist removes a very thin layer of enamel from the toothto be covered with a veneer. They then take an impression of your teeth and help you choose a color that works best with the color of your other teeth. It is important during this first appointment to talk about what kind of results you expect.

How Does the Dentist Prepare Your Teeth for Veneers?

Before bonding the veneer in place, your dentist needs to check it on your tooth to be sure it fits properly and looks natural. After a process of holding the veneer against the tooth, checking the fit and appearance, making adjustments and repeating as needed, your dentist is ready to bond the veneer to the tooth. The tooth, however, still needs to be prepared. The dentist cleans your existing tooth and polishes it. Then, the tooth is etched, roughening it enough to adhere well to the veneer.

How Are the Veneers Bonded in Place?

When the tooth is ready, your dentist puts a special cement onto the back side of the veneer. Then, they place the veneer onto the front side of your tooth and fit it into place. A special light is shined on your tooth to help the cement harden. Once the cement has cured, the dentist examines the results and removes excess cement. You may be asked to come in for a follow-up appointment so your dentist can check your bite and how your gums are reacting to the veneer.
